What to do when your dog has diarrhea, what should I do?
One of the most common problems when owning a Dog is diarrhea.
It might seem odd to write our first post with such a “messy” topic, but after lots of thinking I decided to talk about this because right now my 2 year old doberman is sick with diarrhea. He’s been actually sick for a couple of days now, yeah I know, call me “the worst owner in the world “
However it is not uncommon to miss this problem, specially if you have lots of space where your dog does his business.
I indeed, noticed he was sick after playing with him, when he came to me, he had this "accident" and then I noticed something was wrong.
Now, dogs get sick just about everything, and if your significant other is anything like mine, you will find your dog was given pizza leftovers or those sprouts that were one week old. Or suppose your usual brand is nowhere to be found and you decide to buy a different one. The result? you pouch will get diarrhea.
What’s one to do? First you have to be very careful with what you feed your dog. But what if Rex is already sick?
Back to my Doberman, after trying to figure out how to clean the liquid mess out of the grass I decided to put him on fasting for a whole 24 h period. This may seem inadequate, but trust me, it works wonders, specially if you also give your dog some rice water, yeah just like the one our mothers used to give us when we were kids. In the end dogs are somewhat like people.
After the fastening period I feed my dog with half the usual amount of dog food and half boiled rice. I continue doing this for a couple of days, reducing the amount of rice every day until I feed him only dog food. By then, my dog goes normally and we go back to regular feeding.
Of course the first choice should always be to pay a visit to the veterinarian, specially with puppies. Unfortunately this is ot always possible.same than the used for a person. I however don’t really like to use this as my first choice and I’ve only used it a couple of times in all my time as a dog owner, which spans for 42 years now.

I always prefer to pay attention to what my dogs eat, and I try not to run out of the usual brand of dog food, however when the unexpected happens, it is better to be prepared with these handy tips, just in case.
Please remember this is only a general guide as to how I handle my dogs, in no case is this a professional advice and the election of choice should always be to visit a licensed veterinarian.
