Owning a dog is not easy. And it is certainly not cheap. And choosing the best breed for you and your lifestyle is not something to be taken lightly.
There are lots of breeds out there, and they are all fantastic, but how do you know which one is the best for you?
You have to consider how much time you can spend with a dog. Some dogs need lots of exercise to thrive; Golden Retrievers, German Shepards, Dombermans are good examples. And if you’re not willing to have long walks and hours of play everyday, then maybe this kind of dogs are not for you.
Another important thing to keep in mind is how much space a dog is going to need. A Yorkie or a Chihuahua might do well in small spaces, but a Saint Bernard or a Great Dane won’t be happy in a small apartment and neither will you.
Grooming is also something that needs to be considered. Some breeds need tons of grooming, for example a French Bison or Poodles, while others like a Doberman will be nice and clean after just a couple of minutes a day.
Something else to keep in mind is, why do you want a dog in the first place? Is it for protection? As a companion to watch Netflix? Are you planning to practice lots of sports with your new dog?
Always remember to discuss this when trying to choose the best dog for you.
Now you probably already know what kind of dog you want or need. But have you thought about how much it is going to cost you?
I mean, it is not only the food, just like humans, dogs need to visit their veterinarian on a regular basis, and believe me when I tell you, pet medications aren’t cheap -as far as I know there is no medical insurance for pets and there is also no generic meds for them either-.
You will need toys, perhaps some clothing, bowls for water and food, a bed, some grooming tools, a leash and collar.
And you will have to be ready when accidents happen, because they do. No matter how well behaved your dog is; there will be accidents. They will break or chew on things, get sick or dig on your garden and then run into your recently cleaned house, stories are countless. They will be responsible for the worst mess you've ever seen.
Be ready for the unpredictable.
By now you are probably thinking about getting a cat instead, but trust me, getting a dog is by far one of the best decisions you will ever make. They will make you laugh until you cry with their nonsense. You will be amazed as to how intelligent they can be and you will utterly understand what pure love is when your dog comes to you after the roughest of days.
